Ellen and Annemarie are two girls who live in Denmark (Copenhagen). Annemarie has a sister named Kirsti and a sister who had died in a car accident named Lise. Ellen, Kirsti, and Annemarie are racing down the block toward the next block, when a nazi soldier stops them and asks why they are running. They explain that they are racing to practice for track. The nazi soldier takes an interest in Kirsti and says that she reminds him of his own daughter and then tells them to stop running from now on because it makes them look like hoodlums. Then the girls go home to their apartment trying not to tell Mrs. Johansen about what happened. Kirsti blurts out that they met a soldier and that she was not scared. Then Peter stops by and delivers the secret news paper to mama and papa. Peter was Lise's fiance and apart of the resistance against the Nazis. Then they explain that the nazis came here to occupy Denmark and the king let them because Denmark was small and did not have an army.
Chapters 3-5
The Johansens lived a few months without trouble but when Kirsti breaks a button they go to a Jewish owned store to buy a new button for her coat. But when they get there the shop is closed and there is German sign over the window. They find out that the Nazis are relocating the Jewish people in Denmark. Then Peter comes with a warning that the soldiers are coming and that they must take Ellen's famly some where safe. Ellen comes to live with the Johansens to hide from the Nazi soldiers. Then when the girls are sleeping the soldiers invaded their house and and ordered them to tell where the Ellen's parents where. The soldiers asked why Ellen has black hair and Annemarie and Kirsti have blond. then mama tells them that Ellen is Lise, Annemarie's dead sister. And, that she was from another father. Then, when they don't believe mama, papa shows them a baby picture of Lise when she had black hair. The soldiers believe him and leave, for now.
Chapters 6-7
The girls are deciding what to do about school, and mama suggests that they do not go to school because it is not safe for them. The Johansens go to their uncle Henrik's house, because it is close to the sea. They get on the train and a soldier asks mrs. johansen if they are celebrating new year and she says that they are visiting her brother. They get to henrik's house in Gilleleje where the two girls go and sit on rocks and watch the ocean until mrs. johansen tells them that it would be safer to stay indoors.
Chapters 8-17
Mrs. Johansen tells every one that her great aunt Birte had died and Annemarie thinks it is odd since she had never herd of any great aunt birte.so she goes out to the stable where her uncle is milking his cow blossom and explains that it is not too good to know everything and that you are braver when you don't know what will happen. but uncle Henrik tells her that she is correct and that there is no aunt Birte and that she should just act like there is one. then they hear talking and uncle Henrik tells her that the casket has arrived. Every one is at the party and Ellan tells Annemarie that she is sorry about her aunt and annemarie wanted to tell her that there is no aunt birtebut then annemarie noticed that no one was talking and that she didn't know these people and that none of them where mourning. but the then they hear a knock on the door and see that peter was there with Ellans family and Ellan runs to hug them and then they sat on the couch and cried together. then the soldiers arrive and ask why we had the lights on and mama says "some one has died and it is a part of our culture to invite friend and family to mourn her death". and the soldier says that he knows are culture and that the casket should be open and that he wants us to open it but mama says that aunt Birte died of typhus and that we could get infected. the soldier then tells her to open it after they leave and to turn the lights off. so when peter waits for them to get in to their car and go he says a prayer just in case they where still listening and when he finished he said "ok time to open the casket". and to annemarie's surprise there where coats and blankets in the casket. then peter started handing them out. then peter tells them to put the coats on and to follow him to hinrek's boat. and then peter turns and gives a little packet to ellan's dad and tells him that it is important that he gives it to henrik. peter disappeared through the door way and Ellan's parent where waiting for an hour before mama says that it is time to go. so Ellan says her good byes to mama papa and annemarie and mama takes them to the docks leaving annemarie all alone in the house. In the morning annamarie realises that mama did not com home and that when she looked through the window she saw her mama laying on the ground. she went running out and helped her mother up and mama said i think i tripped on a root and broke my ankle on the way back. so annemarie helped her mother to the house but on her way in she saw a packet on the ground and knew it was the same one that peter gave to Ellan's dad so she laid mama on the couch and she put the packet in a basket under a napkin with bread and cheese so she is running when she hears to soldiers with dogs tell her to stop and ask her why she is running at this time and she says that she is taking lunch to her uncle who is a fishermen. but then the soldier says that his dog smells meat. and then he took out the bread and gave it to his dogs and then took out the cheese and crumpled it up in the napkin and drops it to the ground and sees the packet picks it out and opens it and finds a handkerchief and drops it on the ground. and annamarie picks it up and the soldiers go away and annemarie goes on her way to the docks and sees henrik on his boat and gives him the handkerchief and turns to go home. then when she mama henrik and kirsti are at the dinner table she asks henrik about the handkerchief and he says that it contained a drug that numbed the sense of smell for a dog and that the people where in a secret compartment under the ship. they all wonder when th war will end.
The war ended 4 years later.
peter had died. he was executed they where all sad but happy at the same time. because the war had ended and the jewish people where coming back. annemarie was older now and so was kirsti. they watch the fireworks. and annemarie's parents came over and told her the truth of Lise's death. that she was part of the resistance and a German officer ran her down on perpose. she ran to her hiding place for Ellan's necklace and asked her papa if he could fix it and that she would wear it until Ellan comes back. and they knew that the war was over and that they could help people move back in. and she knew that soon Ellan would come home.
